Ubuntu SSH – OpenSSH Server and OpenSSH Client

The OpenSSH project contains the most popular SSH Client and Server for Linux. It is free and the OpenSSH Client comes with Ubuntu.

SSH, or Secure SHell, allows one computer to access another. The server process runs in the background awaiting client requests. The client on the other hand is only run when needed, commonly from a terminal or a script such as one that would run in a cron.

If you have uninstalled OpenSSH or just don’t have it installed you can open a terminal and install it with this simple command:

sudo apt-get install openssh-client

The OpenSSH Server, which does not come pre-installed with Ubuntu, is installed as follows:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server
